Sailing has always been a word that evoked adventure, freedom, and connection to nature. For me, however, it was more than just a romantic idea—it became a dream, a path, and eventually, a calling.
1. The Beginning of a Dream
My love for the sea began during a family trip to the coast of Croatia. As a child, I was fascinated by the sight of ships and boats gliding on the horizon. At that time, I didn’t know the difference between motorboats, yachts, and sailboats. I was captivated by them all, though my initial interest leaned toward motor yachts.
Everything changed the first time I went sailing with a friend on his sailboat. The moment we opened the sails, I felt something I had never experienced before. The sounds of the sea and the wind, the silence, the relaxation, and the sense of freedom—all of these sensations coursed through me. In that moment, I knew: sailing wasn’t just fascinating; it was my passion.
2. The Decision to Learn More
That first sailing experience left me yearning for more. I decided to take the first step by obtaining my boat operator’s license. Over time, I joined my friend on a few more sailing trips, each time gaining a little more experience and confidence. However, I knew I still had a long way to go before I could take the helm myself.
At the time, my financial situation didn’t allow me to rent a sailboat and go on my own adventures. This limitation made me think of alternative ways to spend more time on the water. While researching online, I discovered a skipper’s training program offered by SailWeek. Without hesitation, I decided this was the path I wanted to follow.
3. Lessons from the Skipper’s Course
The skipper’s course was both challenging and rewarding. It taught me that sailing isn’t just about navigating the seas; it’s about teamwork, problem-solving, and respect for nature. Learning how to read nautical charts, steer the boat, and manage the sails gave me the confidence I needed to move forward. More importantly, it gave me a deeper appreciation for the art and science of sailing.
One of my favorite moments during the course was my first time taking the helm. Feeling the boat respond to the wind and my adjustments was exhilarating. It was a reminder that while the sea may be vast and powerful, it is also inviting and willing to teach those who are open to learning.
4. Why Sailing Became My Passion
Sailing isn’t just a hobby; it’s a lifestyle. It’s about embracing simplicity, connecting with the elements, and finding peace in the rhythm of the waves. For me, it’s also about self-discovery and growth. Each journey teaches me something new, whether it’s a practical skill or a lesson about patience and perseverance.
Since completing my training, I have realized that this is not just a career or a pastime—it’s the only way of life I truly want. I dream of owning my own sailboat one day, a vessel that will not only be my home on the water but also a gateway to endless adventures. Until that day, I am determined to keep learning, exploring, and sharing my experiences with others who might also be dreaming of a life on the sea.
